I know this poor blog has been dead from when it was started…anyway here’s some stuff for any readers who are still lingering…

My pick for Top Places in Chennai for Sewing Enthusiasts:
1)Pantheon Road /Cotton Street(Egmore)-My favorite place for cheap yet sturdy cotton and synthetic fabrics…a shopaholic’s paradise….you can buy material of different widths ranging from 36″ to 60″…Perfect stuff for summer dresses, bags, curtains, bedcovers and cushion covers…the range of material in lovely prints for kids is worth looking at…Some sellers even have readymade garments for sale…but check the sizes properly before you buy!

2)Shastri Stores(Nungambakkam)– This tiny shop has everything from fabric paints, beads to embroidery thread…Awesome place to shop for gifts, lil gadgets and books for kids…check out their range of stuff sometime..you won’t return empty handed…The shop owner sure has a knack for selling you usefull stuff you cant resist buying.

3)Selvam Thread Stores(Village Road)-An even tinier shop; stocks everything from iron-on applique patches, lace, decorative zari borders, material, zips, crystals and ribbon rosettes…you name it they have it…cheap and affordable stuff…my favorite place to get sewing notions but it is not open on Sundays..

4)Raja Thread Stores (Panagal Park)-another small shop..ask anyone in Panagal Park and they’ll point you to it..not open on Sundays though…stocks all the things you’d need to sew happily…

5) [Can’t remember the exact name] Lace Shop in one of the side lanes of Pondy Bazaar- handmade lace and thread…also limited range of beads and satin ribbon.

6)Sornam Stores(Pondy Bazaar)-open on Sundays ๐Ÿ™‚ they stock stuff you won’t find in other places…Plain pillow covers in pastel shades, plain towels and most importantly Aida Fabric also known as Matty cloth in about three different shades in addition to white…addictive!

7)Flower Bazaar near Currimbhoy’s (Paris Corner)- an old haunt of mine…the usual place to get stiff buckram and cotton gaada cloth for makin stage props and backdrops in college..there are a number of small shops selling hand made lace by the metre, wooden buttons, coconut shell buttons, iron-on applique patches, embroidery thread, candle making kits, crystals, flower making wire, beads, tiny bells and ribbon rosettes…great if you manage wading through the crowd and if you find the shops…Note: always take a guide with you!

8)Thakurdas Choithram-velvet, denim, corduroy etc…basically the hard-to-find materials all under one roof!

If you have any additions to this list please post ’em as comments…Hope this is useful ๐Ÿ™‚
